Cinema Spaces explores the lives and histories of grand picture palaces and their contemporary counterparts, initially focusing on the spaces of Marvellous Melbourne, our ‘City of Theatres’.
Since the 1910s, the cinema has ushered us out of the mundane and into a phantasmagoria of dreamlike awe, from the foyer to the very first flicker of projector light.
While some cinemas are thriving, others have been repurposed, divided, hidden or lost.
Cinema Spaces emphasises the community value of these spaces and hopes to inspire a future of cinema.
